Hoshin and Strategic Thinking

Overview

How to Improve planning results with a structured approach that aligns business objectives with performance excellence initiatives. BMGI’s Strategic Thinking & Planning Workshop teaches a “vision driven” approach to planning that brings structure, creativity and innovation to a company’s planning processes and a tighter focus to any improvement effort.

BMGI uses the rigor of Hoshin Kanri to systematically align the organisation’s mission, vision, values and objectives with Per-formance Excellence programs. By combining statistical analytical tools with creative/visionary thinking, companies can develop actionable items and results. This workshop is not just about planning; it’s about planning and doing.

Hoshin takes a “top-down” approach to organisational improvement by working “backwards from perfect” to achieve the desired ideal future. Instead of focusing on removing problems (waste, defects, variability), it focuses on the creation of an entirely new designs, opening up new possibilities. Using the structure of Management Planning Tools, Hoshin takes planning beyond the initial planning point to the next level, enabling the organisation to actually produce results.

“Hoshin Planning lets your organisation create its own future by helping you prioritise what really matters.” Hoshin Planning: Vision-driven Leadership for Breakthrough Improvement, Industry Week, March 2007

CLASSROOM

If your organisation is embarking on an improvement program, this workshop will help you better align your initiative with your overall business strategy so that every change you make will go toward accomplishing your goals. For those starting a Lean Six Sigma deployment, BMGI highly recommends this workshop before any deployment training takes place. It can also be used as a second generation booster to any Performance Excellence initiative, when your company is managing a major change—Mergers, consolidations, changes in business focus, moving forward and integrating products, departments or processes.

For those who a new toolset—Companies or departments that lack an understanding on how to deal with ideas. Perhaps meetings drag on without actionable items, people have stopped feeling good about how the company makes decisions, or you need a better way to plan your future. This gives you an organised means for planning to improve organisational alignment, increase synergy and focus and boost stamina and results.

When you want to revitalise an existing initiative—Hoshin can act as a “tonic” to re-energise your organisation’s efforts or help you determine what elements of a plan will fit best.

Classroom Agenda

This is an onsite workshop for company leaders whose job it is to lead steering committees and organ-isational change efforts. BMGI’s recommended approach consists of a five day program as follows:

Days 1 - 2

Workshop with Case Study

This is the heart of the Strategic Planning/Hoshin workshop, and where your team learns to use the Seven Management Planning tools to make critical decisions. The team will work in groups to apply the tools they learn to a case study. This process allows the team to learn without the bias of existing business issues clogging their thinking.

Day 3

Team Preparation

This is a preparation workshop for the team to discuss with the trainer what the organisation’s biggest issues are, and where the biggest obstacles lie. This day of discussions will smooth the way for the group workshop by allowing your company to first think through its desired outcomes and the criteria by which you will describe success.

Days 4-5

Workshop with Your Business Issues

The team applies the tools they’ve learned to your own business, and develops an actionable plan for change. Recommended quarterly or bi-annual refreshers. Companies often request refresher workshops. This can go a long way to helping keep programs in motion per the plan.
